Therapies and Treatments

Manage symptoms and help slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease through various therapies and treatments.

Finding the right Neurologist

Once diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, you should see a Neurologist or Movement Disorder Specialist (MDS) to assess your specific condition and prescribe treatment and medications. You should also continue seeing your regular doctor for all general health concerns and to help with the management of secondary symptoms. An MDS is a neurologist who specializes in the area of movement disorders by completing a “fellowship” of two years in movement disorders. The specialists are also involved in research and/or teaching.

Things to consider

The first step to consider following your diagnosis is to find a qualified physician. Insurance types are all different, however you will usually be required to get a referral for a specialist, such as a neurologist, by your primary care physician. If your specific condition warrants such, your physician will refer you to a neurologist, who then may decide that you should see a movement disorder specialist. Be sure to consider which movement disorder specialist you would like to see with your physician if you have a specific specialist in mind. If you are located in an area where there are no movement disorder specialists, at the minimum be sure to be seen by a neurologist.

When choosing a movement disorder specialist, consider these questions that may prove to be helpful for you:

> Are you comfortable speaking with your physician?

> Do you feel respected by your physician?

> Does this physician have your best interests at heart?

> Are the answers you’re receiving from your doctor satisfactory?

> Do you feel like your concerns and feelings are being taken seriously?

> Are you able to reach your doctor between visits? How long will it take for the physician to respond back to you?

> What is the physician’s backup plan in the event they are not available or out of town?
